Description
A newly discovered lost Skitzo cartoon "Moon Mania" was released in 1922 when the very ideas of rocket fuel began to appear, but the already long-established fantasy of moon travel had taken hold by the late 1800s. Old newspaper records indicate that copies of this cartoon played in various small-town theaters in Florida.
Moviegoers of the time died within hours of viewing the film. Notable claims were of feeling their blood literally boiling under the skin, hot flashes, fever, and sunburns all over their bodies when they had not been exposed to outdoor elements of any kind. Mummified remains or piles of ash were all that were recovered from beds and homes...and there is no true head count on how many died in this bizarre event. All copies of Moon Mania were gathered and burned.
Animation historians were very lucky to discover this scrap of the film as the reel was discovered in an aluminum box submerged in a container of liquid nitrogen under floorboards in an abandoned planetarium. A hastily scribbled note was inside that stated "Keep it COLD!! Do not expose it for any reason as its heat resonates from no Sun or natural means...but from Hell itself!".
