Kamerie was born at just 28 weeks old weighing only 1 pound and 5 ounces. She spent over a year in the NICU and needed life-saving resuscitation nearly every day. Eventually, Kamerie was diagnosed with 18p deletion, a rare genetic condition caused by a missing piece of chromosome 18.

Now approaching 4 years old, Kamerie is finally home with her family and continuing to grow stronger every day. Because she is unable to communicate verbally, Kamerie would sometimes become frustrated and express herself by biting others. To help her communicate, her family introduced a communication device that allows Kamerie to share her thoughts, interests, and emotions with the people around her.

During our time together, Kamerie and I sat side by side and had a conversation about some of her favorite things, including music, books, songs, and Ms. Rachel. Kamerie hopes others will take the time to sit beside her and sing “Wheels on the Bus”.
