What a wonderful way to be woken up this morning, as I turn on my Facebook feed and I'm greeted by Guitar Ray on Bruno Jerez's consistently brilliant show. There is not a more soulful encounter with despair ever to have graced a Northern Soul dancefloor. Guitar Ray is on his knees, drowning in the sheer hopelessness of his love's determination to ruin his life!
An act of unrecognized genius from Senator Jones at the time, as he amazingly chose this Soul masterpiece to be the flipside. If it wasn't for the European Rare Soul scene, this triumphant portrayal of anguish may have passed the world by...
"How Many More Years... Are You Gonna Wreck My Life" is the most beseeching opening for a song. Guitar Ray's pleading vocal paints a picture of wretchedness no man wants to experience. Even worse, he feels it may be too late to start anew; for this aging man has just lost his lover to a younger man... the pain is palpable! Wow, this song penetrates your very being, with its convincing delivery and beautifully sympathetic horns... the hairs on my arms bristle as I listen to his situation of mental torture. If rare soul dance gets any better than this... I've yet to hear it.
