Project Ebonhold is one of the most unique World of Warcraft private servers currently available, taking the familiar world of Wrath of the Lich King and transforming it into something that feels closer to a rogue-lite action RPG than a traditional MMO. Built on the 3.3.5a Wrath of the Lich King client, Ebonhold asks a simple question: what if every adventure through Azeroth was a fresh run where death wasn't the end, but another step toward becoming stronger?

At first glance, the world will look familiar to longtime Wrath players. Northrend is still there. The Lich King still waits atop Icecrown Citadel. Classic dungeons, raids, and iconic locations remain intact. But the way you experience them has been completely redesigned. Instead of following the traditional MMORPG formula of leveling once, gearing once, and endlessly farming the same content, Ebonhold introduces a run-based progression system inspired by games like Vampire Survivors and modern rogue-lite titles. Every run begins at level one. As you adventure, defeat enemies, complete objectives, and survive increasingly dangerous encounters, you level up and are presented with powerful choices that shape your build for that specific run. These abilities, known as Echoes, fundamentally change how your character plays and create an enormous amount of replayability.

No two runs are exactly the same. One character might become a whirlwind of area damage capable of shredding entire packs of enemies. Another may focus on survivability, crowd control, or mobility. Because Echoes are selected throughout the run, players are constantly making meaningful decisions that impact their chances of reaching higher levels and tougher challenges. The result is a version of World of Warcraft where experimentation and adaptation are just as important as gear.

What truly separates Ebonhold from most private servers is that death is part of the design rather than a punishment. Eventually every run ends. Whether you're overwhelmed by elite enemies, a difficult dungeon encounter, or a powerful raid boss, your character's current run will come to a close. However, the progress you make during that run is not lost. Throughout your adventures you earn Soul Ashes, a permanent currency used to unlock account-wide upgrades through a persistent progression system. These upgrades improve your character's power across all future runs, creating a satisfying loop where every attempt makes you stronger than before.

This meta-progression system is one of the server's strongest features. New players can jump in and begin learning the mechanics immediately, while veteran players continue unlocking new possibilities hundreds of hours later. Rather than chasing endless gear resets or worrying about falling behind, players steadily strengthen their accounts through long-term progression. Each failed run contributes to future success.

The server's developers have also heavily customized the game world itself. Azeroth has been repopulated with tens of thousands of additional creatures and encounters, creating a much denser and more dangerous environment than traditional Wrath of the Lich King. Exploration feels rewarding because danger and opportunity can appear almost anywhere. Combined with the rogue-lite structure, even familiar zones feel fresh and unpredictable.

Another major draw is Ebonhold's progressive content release model. Rather than dumping every raid tier into the game at launch, content has been released in stages. The project began with Naxxramas-era progression before advancing into the Ulduar era, allowing the community to experience each phase of Wrath's endgame in a meaningful way. Alongside each content release come additional systems, skill tree expansions, new Echoes, and new achievements that further expand long-term progression.

Now the community is looking toward what may be the biggest update in the server's history: the arrival of Icecrown Citadel.

The upcoming ICC patch represents the culmination of everything Project Ebonhold has been building toward since launch. Icecrown Citadel itself will become accessible, bringing players face to face with Arthas Menethil and the ultimate challenge of Wrath of the Lich King. However, the update is much more than simply opening another raid. According to the developers, the patch will also significantly expand the account-wide progression systems that define the server. Players can expect new Skill Tree nodes, increased Soul Ashes caps, and entirely new Echoes obtained from the bosses and encounters introduced alongside ICC content.
