The original Roe & Co distillery dates back to 1757, when Peter Roe founded the George Roe Distillery on Thomas Street in Dublin. By the 19th century, Roe & Co was one of the biggest names in Irish whiskey, operating what was then Ireland’s largest distillery.
At its peak, Roe & Co’s distillery spanned 17 acres, featuring its famous windmill tower and producing millions of gallons of whiskey annually. It was a key player in what was considered the 'Golden Age' of Irish whiskey, alongside Jameson and Powers.
However, as the 20th century rolled in, the Irish whiskey industry faced major setbacks—economic downturns, the rise of blended Scotch, and Prohibition in the U.S. all contributed to Roe & Co’s decline. By 1926, the distillery shut down, and the brand faded into history.
Fast forward nearly a century to 2017, when Diageo, the global drinks giant behind Johnnie Walker and Guinness, decided to bring back the Roe & Co name. They launched a modern Irish whiskey under the revived brand and in 2019, opened the new Roe & Co Distillery in Dublin’s former Guinness Power Station, just a stone’s throw from where the original distillery once stood.
This whiskey represents a blend of tradition and modern craftsmanship, blending classic Irish whiskey smoothness with contemporary cask influence.
