Description
In this conversation, I’m continuing my Retire at 55 as a Single Black Woman series and asking a question that has been sitting heavy with me: Can I afford the life I say I want when I retire?
After talking about renting vs. buying, paid-off homes, property taxes, repairs, fixed income, and what it really means to age in place, I realized something: my retirement plan is changing.
This conversation is not about giving up on retiring at 55. It is about being honest with myself about the life I want, the money I will need, and the choices I may have to make before I get there.
As a single Black woman planning for retirement, I have to think about housing, healthcare, income, travel, lifestyle, savings, and peace of mind. The dream is still there, but now I’m asking deeper questions: What does my retirement lifestyle actually cost? What do I need to adjust? And am I planning for the real life I want or just the idea of retirement?
Let’s have an honest conversation about retirement planning, lifestyle expectations, financial reality, and what happens when the plan starts to change.
