Reaction to Kansas SB244

Description

Trans Kansans are being told their driver’s licenses and any corrected birth certificates are invalid. Overnight.

No grace period. Just a letter that basically says: congrats, your identity is now null and void.

After the Kansas Legislature overrode Gov. Laura Kelly’s veto, SB 244 went into effect. If the gender marker on someone’s ID doesn’t match their sex assigned at birth, or a birth certificate has had the gender marker changed, they’re required to surrender it immediately and get a new one that complies with the law.

Imagine opening your mail and finding out you can’t legally drive to work tomorrow. Or to school. Or to the grocery store. Because politicians decided THIS is what should be a priority.

About 1,500 trans Kansans received these letters. Roughly 0.05% of the state’s population. Not because trans people are dangerous. It’s not about protecting anyone. It’s about control, it’s about erasure. It’s about making life administratively impossible for a tiny group of people and calling it policy.

And the same law also polices bathrooms, showers, locker rooms. It allows people who believe someone used the “wrong” restroom to file a complaint and seek $1,000. Which means more suspicion and hypervigilance. Not just for trans people, but for anyone who doesn’t fit someone else’s narrow idea of what a man or woman “should” look like.

I transitioned 11 years ago, I know what it feels like for a little piece of plastic to mean everything. An ID isn’t just an ID. It’s safety at a traffic stop, it’s dignity at the airport, it’s not having to explain yourself to every stranger with a badge or a clipboard.

So when the state says “surrender it,” what they’re really saying is: surrender yourself.

Fuck that.

To my trans siblings in Kansas: I see you. I'm so sorry that this is one more thing you have to deal with.

You are still valid. We have always been here. And no legislature gets to rewrite that. 🏳️‍⚧️
