Shaly Farid spent nine years in and out of prison for various offences, including drug offences, rioting and causing grievous hurt. After his release, anxiety made it difficult to work with others, so he opened a nasi lemak stall at Amoy Street Food Centre. But when the business struggled to turn a profit, he joined an apprenticeship under veteran hawker Hajjah Roziah Adon to learn her signature ayam penyet.
Two weeks into training, the pressure became too much. "I came here to train, Hajjah. I not come here to work," he said before walking away, leaving Hajjah wondering if he would return.
