Description
When Princess Mononoke was released internationally, producer Harvey Weinstein reportedly requested significant cuts to make the film more “accessible” to Western audiences.
In response, Hayao Miyazaki sent him a Katana accompanied by a simple message: “No cuts.”
True or not in every details, the story says a lot about the film. Nothing in Mononoke Hime is softened or simplified and that’s exactly why it hits so hard.
Princess Mononoke was conceived as a complete work: complex, ambiguous, unfiltered, and this insistence on artistic integrity is part of what gives the film, and its music, such enduring power.
