Description
Learn the difference between the pentatonic scale and the diatonic scale on guitar, and how adding just two notes turns one into the other.
Steve Stine starts with a minor pentatonic shape at the 8th fret and moves it down three frets to get C major pentatonic, the five-note scale most guitarists learn first. Then he adds two notes, the 4th and the 7th, which create half steps and turn the pentatonic into the full diatonic scale. You'll hear how different the scale sounds, and see why counting 1 to 5 in the pentatonic doesn't match the numbers used in music theory.
In the last section he shows the same idea in minor: you add the same two notes, but they get different numbers because the root changes. A short recap closes the lesson.
