Description
Pancreatic cysts can have different causes, symptoms and treatment needs. Susanne Warner, M.D., a Mayo Clinic hepatobiliary and pancreas surgeon, explains what pancreatic cysts are, how they are diagnosed and when they may need treatment.
Some pancreatic cysts develop after inflammation of the pancreas, known as pancreatitis, while others develop on their own. They may cause symptoms, but some are discovered incidentally during imaging for another health concern.
Dr. Warner discusses how specialists evaluate pancreatic cysts and distinguish benign cysts from cysts that may be precancerous or cancerous. She also explains features that may require closer attention, including jaundice, changes in the pancreatic duct and a mass or mural nodule within the cyst wall.
Treatment depends on the type of pancreatic cyst, its location, whether it is causing symptoms and whether there is concern that it could develop into cancer. When surgery is appropriate, the location of the cyst within the pancreas helps determine the type of operation. Dr. Warner also discusses when minimally invasive pancreas surgery may be an option and the importance of receiving pancreatic surgical care from an experienced team.
