🇨🇦 A Pakistani passenger reportedly faces a C$1,350 fine at a Canadian airport after a trained detection dog discovers food and animal products inside his luggage! But what exactly was he carrying, and why are Canadian airport authorities so strict about bringing food into the country?
In this video, we explain the reported incident at Toronto Pearson International Airport, where Canada's Border Services Agency (CBSA) detected undeclared food products in a Pakistani traveller's luggage with the help of a specially trained detection dog named Aggie.
According to media reports, authorities discovered more than 16 kilograms of food products, including:
🔹 Goat trotters (Siri Paye)
🔹 Chicken meat
🔹 Desi ghee
🔹 Milk powder
The products were reportedly seized, and a penalty of approximately 1,350 Canadian dollars was imposed.
But this story highlights an important issue for thousands of Pakistanis living abroad.
❤️ Why do overseas Pakistanis carry food from Pakistan?
Many Pakistanis living in Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States and European countries return home to visit their families. When their holidays end and they prepare to return abroad, they often want to take something special from Pakistan.
It could be homemade biryani, traditional meat dishes, cooked chicken, desi ghee, sweets, spices or other favourite foods prepared by their mothers and families.
For many overseas Pakistanis, these foods are more than just meals. They are connected to family memories, traditions and the taste of home.
However, something that is perfectly normal to carry within Pakistan may not be permitted when entering another country.
✈️ Important airport and international travel rules
Countries such as Canada, the UK, the United States and European nations have different regulations regarding the import of food, meat, dairy products and agricultural items.
Some products may be permitted under specific conditions, while others may be restricted or completely prohibited.
For example:
Meat and poultry products can face strict import restrictions.
Homemade cooked food is not automatically permitted just because it has been prepared and packed properly.
Dairy products, including ghee and milk-based items, may have additional requirements.
Certain packaged foods, spices and sweets may be allowed, depending on their ingredients, origin and destination.
Passengers should declare food and animal products whenever required by customs authorities.
⚠️ What should travellers do before packing food?
Before travelling internationally, always check the official customs and food-import regulations of your destination country. Do not assume that cooked, frozen, homemade or vacuum-packed food is automatically allowed.
If you are unsure about an item, declare it and ask the airport or customs authorities. Failure to declare restricted products can result in confiscation and financial penalties.
In this video, we explain the Canadian airport incident, the role of detection dogs, the reported fine and the important lessons for Pakistanis travelling abroad.
A little taste of home can be precious, but knowing international travel rules can save you from an expensive surprise!
