I’ve always loved the classic black and white harlequin floors you see in old European homes, especially in places like Versailles. There’s something timeless about that bold checkerboard pattern; elegant, graphic, and surprisingly simple.

In this video I’m beginning the process of creating a Versailles-inspired harlequin floor in our conservatory. What started as inspiration from historic French interiors was also influenced by a charming New Orleans courtyard I once stayed in that had a beautiful black and white floor.

Today I’m walking you through the first half of the project, salvaging wood from the kitchen tile job, planing, painting, measuring the room, laying out the pattern, and painting the classic black and white checkerboard floor that will eventually transform this space.

If you’ve ever wondered how to create a painted harlequin floor, a checkerboard floor DIY, or bring a little European style into your home, this project is a wonderful place to start.

This is part of my ongoing journey of creating an Everyday Chateau—bringing timeless European charm into an American home, one project at a time.

More to come soon as we finish the rest of the room.
