Feeling stuck and don’t know what to create in your art journal? In this easy art journaling process, I’m sharing a simple way to fill a blank page using color, patterns, doodles, mark-making, and creative play—perfect for beginners or anyone feeling a little creatively stuck. ✨
Hello, creative friends!
Have you ever opened your art journal, stared at that blank page and thought… Okay. Now what? 😂 Because SAME.
For this page, I honestly didn’t need a big idea or a perfectly planned illustration. I simply started creating. I divided my page into different sections and slowly filled each one with colors, repetitive patterns, loose marks, handwriting, doodles, and whatever else felt good in the moment.
And that’s really the whole point of this exercise.
Sometimes we put so much pressure on ourselves to make something beautiful or meaningful that we forget we’re allowed to just PLAY.
For this art journal page, I mixed different supplies from my collection, including Faber-Castell products and Caran d’Ache NEOCOLOR II water-soluble wax pastels. I played with different colors, textures, line weights, patterns, and layers and simply let the page grow as I went.
No perfect drawing required.
No complicated plan.
No worrying about whether everything matches.
Just START somewhere.
Make a line. Add a shape. Repeat it. Change colors. Scribble something. Add another pattern. Write a few words. And before you know it, that intimidating blank page isn’t blank anymore. 💛
If you’ve been feeling creatively stuck lately, I hope you’ll grab your sketchbook or art journal and create along with me. You absolutely do NOT have to make your page look like mine. Use the supplies you already have, choose colors that make you happy, make up your own patterns and see where the page takes you.
Because creativity doesn’t always have to begin with a brilliant idea.
Sometimes you just have to begin.
