Description
We've had this hardwood dining table for years, it was painted at some point in its life and was looking pretty beat up. We recently decided to replace it but I didn't want to get rid of it, or at least not all of it. I saw some potential in the hardwood top and legs and I knew I could turn it into something much cooler.
I took some inspiration from mid-century modern design and through that became determined to transform the table into what you see in this video. To accomplish this I began by cutting down the top, and also tapering the edges and rounding the corners to create a more simplistic shape. The tapered edges give the illusion of a thinner top without sacrificing strength. All of the paint was scraped off (very easily), the scraper is linked below!
I also built a table saw sled, which enabled me to spin each leg with a cordless drill, while also feeding the sled into the spinning table saw blade. I can assure you each leg was held very firmly and safely, and at no point was any bodily extremity in danger. I have to say, I don't recommend this approach to anyone who is less than completely comfortable using their table saw. You've been warned.
The table was assembled with the same corner brackets and threaded fasteners, and the entire table was built using the same materials from the original table.
I used Varathane "natural" oil-based stain and 3 coats of Varathane satin polyurethane water-based clear coat. The finish is lovely and really allows the grain to show off without excessive darkening.
