Why are wildfires decreasing in Canada while the damage from wildfires increases at a dangerous pace? Canada's wildfire peak was in 1989 when over 12 thousand wildfires were recorded by the federal government and burned 7.5 million hectares. In 2023, just under seven thousand wildfires burned a staggering 17 million hectares of land. So what is the cause of this statistical anomaly? We don't have the answers yet, but nobody has credibly explained why Canada's wildfire seasons are getting progressively worse and more damaging while the number of wildfires are actually decreasing.
