So as my Minoxidil Journey is coming to a close I have decided it is about time to experiment with other techniques in isolation to try to identify if they help improve beard growth on their own.

Low level laser therapy or LLLT is a proven method of regrowing hair on the scalp – I want to experiment whether the same can be said for our beards.
Essentially lllt utilises lasers at low frequencies and has been reportedly shown to increase terminal hair count by 19 new hairs per cm over the course of 6 months
I have purchased a similar Laser comb, however I opted for a rather cheap one in comparison and I am using this cheaper version at my own risk.
Now the problem generally with relying on something used for scalp regrowth and the studies that pertain to them is that their mechanism of action is often the inhibition of dht which wouldn’t, in theory bode well for our beards since dht has an important role in facial hair growth.
However we should remember not everything that helps regrow hair achieves this through dht inhibition and in this case we can make some broad based assumptions that these may help with beard growth – but with a lack of documented evidence we can’t say for sure at this moment.
For example Minoxidil is not a dht blocker and has been shown by me and others to work for beard growth.
In regards to Minoxidil it still isn’t fully understood exactly how it grows hair, whilst some factors have been identified such as vasodilation and potassium channel opening there is no compelling scientific evidence to suggest it works as a DHT inhibitor nor is it marketed as such.
Essentially what it does is trigger and lengthen the angen phase which is the growth phase of hair and reduces the telogen phase where the hair is detached from the papillia and waiting to shed.
Another noted side effect of Minoxidil is hypertrichosis – which is abnormal and often unwanted hair growth on other areas of the body.
The laser comb and other low level laser therapy treatments – are not shown to block dht and like Minoxidil, its mechanism for growth, whilst not fully understood has been shown to trigger and lengthen the angen phase, open potassium channels, and act as a vasodilator with several authors noting the overlap between Minoxidil’s and low level laser therapy’s mechanism of action. The Vasodilation of both Minoxidil and Low level laser therapy is speculated to be the relationship they both share with nitric oxide
Here are a few reported benefits
- Clincially proven to increase the size of capliaries under the hair follicle which will increase blood flow and nutrients
- it Increases Adenosine triprosphate – which increases the metabolic rate of cells which leads to Protein synthesis and cell proliferation
