Never Take This Shot! The Quartering Angle That Almost Ruined My Season | 100% WILD Podcast Ep. 484
In this episode of the 100% WILD Podcast, Matt Drury and Tim Kjellesvik get real about the gritty, high-pressure world of suburban bowhunting and small-parcel whitetail management. Tim breaks down the hunt where he punched his early-season Missouri buck tag on a tiny six-acre strip of timber backing up to a power line corridor. Hunting a massive 30.48 barometric pressure cold-front spike, Tim executed a 27-yard shot on an un-patterned mature buck, only to face every hunter's worst nightmare: bumping the wounded deer from its bed eight hours later. He details the painstaking morning recovery with his buddy Tony Cantrell, the effectiveness of the gutless method on field-dressed game, and why bowhunters need to ditch risky heart shots in favor of dependable, high-percentage double-lung shot placement.
The conversation turns to the emotional reality of mentoring youth hunters as Tim recounts taking his 14-year-old daughter Sophie into the timber with a compound bow. Sophie faced the extreme emotional swings of archery within a single sit—navigating a difficult, rushed quartering shot on a mature buck before earning instant redemption 20 minutes later by dropping a large doe. The hosts examine the intense logistics of recovering marginally hit whitetails, including coordinating volunteer search grids through the Rack Pack Facebook group and mobilizing thermal drone deer recovery teams. To close out the show, the guys dive into a crazy "Versus the Internet" news segment exposing a North Dakota archery club president accused of embezzling $183,000 before dramatically withdrawing his guilty plea.
