Description
For this year's Christmas ornament I thought I would make a wreath, and in making this form, I thought I would make a wood turned torus. I decided I would add stripes to make it appear like a candy cane design. I use the sticks from the PDX airport flooring project to make a wood turned segmented torus. I made 73 12 segmented rings that I cut a 5° angle in and stacked these rings together to make the torus. I then cut it into six pieces and added a striped ring in the space between the cut pieces of the torus. I glued everything back together again and that gave me a stripe candy cane pattern within the donut shape. I wood turned this glue up on the lathe. I glued the torus to a circle that I had cut out on the CNC machine and then attached this circle to the chuck on the lathe. I turned as much as I could with that setup. Then I glued a second circle to the other side of the torus with hot glue and I turned the torus around and held it from the other side. This allowed me to turn the other parts of the torus that I couldn't reach on the first pass. After I sanded it to 600 grit and added walnut finish, it came out really nice.
