A space object tracked for decades vanished from its predicted path, leaving astronomers searching for answers. Further observations revealed faint gas escaping from beneath its dark surface. Although it lacked the bright tail and glowing coma of an ordinary comet, researchers identified it as a rare dark comet. The discovery could complicate efforts to track near Earth objects and predict their future movements. It also raises new questions about how many supposed asteroids may be hiding similar behaviour.
