I want to remind you of this old and mostly forgotten technique of "infinite" flight. It complements the punch bow technique very well. You don't take any durability damage on your armor/elytra/bow, but it is really hard to master. This technique is quite good for long distance travels. You can even fall down into the void and still save yourself. On the other hand it is quite useless for short distance travels in which case you are better off with a bow.
Use +-40 degree angles (last entry on the (F3) "Facing" line). In each cycle drop between 60 and 80 meters. Don't change your direction abruptly, it causes a loss of momentum. With unbreaking 3 on the elytra you can travel up to 47 km, before it degrades.
