It’s the 5th Anniversary of “The Nirks Meet the Instruments!” An Award-Winning online music education series that teaches children and families all about the musical instruments in a symphony orchestra! To celebrate, we’re re-releasing the series in 4 parts by section – woodwinds, brass, strings, and percussion/conductor with all new “Where are they now?” bonus content / performances in each part! Welcome to the Meet the Instruments 5-year Anniversary Special!

The Nirks have been wanting to start their own orchestra at castle Nirkenstein for ages. Now, thanks to the help of their new friends from Orchestra Nova Northwest (formerly Portland Columbia Symphony,) they can! Join the Nirks on their musical journey through the orchestra.

Want to skip right to the “Where are they now?” bonus content? No problem! You can watch it here:

Today, we’ll meet all of the woodwind instruments in and orchestra! Including the flutes, clarinets, oboes and bassoons!

We will be meeting the Flute and Piccolo! The highest woodwind instruments in the orchestra. Join Vincent, Miss Chevious and their new friend, professional flute and piccolo player, Liberty Broillet, as she tells us all about the flute and piccolo. She and Miss Chevious will also perform a lovely flute duet together for us at the end of the episode! Miss Chevious has been working really hard to master the flute!
In Episode 2 we will be meeting the Clarinet! The Clarinet is the first reed instrument we will meet. What’s a reed?!? Let's find out! Next we join Vincent, Mo Mummy and their new friend, professional Clarinetist, Sean Kelleher, to learn all about the Clarinet and its very big brother, the Bass Clarinet! Sean and Mo have been working on a fun duet together, and they’ll play it for us at the end of the episode. Mo is so excited about the Clarinet, and he’s been really “wrapped” up in his practicing! He sounds great!

The Clarinet, which uses a reed to make sounds… but the Oboe is a DOUBLE reed! Two reeds? How does that work? Vincent can find out… Vincent and his oboe playing sister Vincenza will be meeting with the fabulous professional oboist Victoria Racz to learn all about the Oboe, and maybe a couple other Oboe-related instruments too! Vincenza and Victoria will even show a bit of how they actually MAKE the reeds for their Oboes too. Vincenza has been practicing a very fun new duet, and she’ll perform it with Victoria.

Last but definitely not least, we will be meeting the Bassoon and Contrabassoon, the biggest and lowest members of the woodwind family! The Bassoon is Vincent's favorite instrument, and he's been practicing hard to get ready for his episode. His friend and teacher, Nicole Buetti is a professional bassoonist and contrabassoonist, and she can't wait to teach you all about the bassoon, how it works, and why it might attract pandas! Wait, what? Pandas? Oh no, what now?!? Vincent and Nicole also have an awesome duet to play together that shows off both of their instruments!

The Nirks give you an up close and personal look at each of their instruments with their professional musician teachers from Orchestra Nova Northwest (Formerly Portland Columbia Symphony). This series is a great way to introduce young kids (and kids at heart) to all of the musical instruments that make up a symphony orchestra. A wonderful homeschool, or classroom tool to help kids learn about each instrument that makes up an orchestra. Join the Nirks and Orchestra Nova Northwest for Meet the Instruments!

Easter Egg Bonus Content: We have a special extra treat for you! Since filming Meet the Instruments, Vincent has formed his very own “Big Bombastic Bassoon Club!” He and his two new friends, Quackenpus and Professor Panda, are here to perform “Platypus in the Garden” from Nicole Buetti’s “A Series of Oddities.”
