It’s the 5th Anniversary of “The Nirks Meet the Instruments!” An Award Winning online music education series that teaches children and families all about the musical instruments in a symphony orchestra! To celebrate, we’re re-releasing the series in 4 parts by section – woodwinds, brass, strings, and percussion/conductor with all new “Where are they now?” bonus content / performances in each part! Welcome to the Meet the Instruments 5-year Anniversary Special!
The Nirks have been wanting to start their own orchestra at castle Nirkenstein for ages. Now, thanks to the help of their new friends from Orchestra Nova Northwest (formerly Portland Columbia Symphony,) they can! Join the Nirks on their musical journey through the orchestra.
Today, we’ll meet all of the string instruments in an orchestra! Including the violin, viola, cello, bass and harp!
First up, the Violin! Spot the Spider is here with his teacher, professional violinist Stephen Shepherd! They're really excited to show you the violin, and to play for you too. Spot is already a master of strings with his webs, let's see how he does playing the violin. The violin is the smallest and highest stringed instrument in the orchestra, and it can make some really amazing sounds! Stephen can even play up to 4 notes at once... Wow! Stephen and Spot have been practicing a fun, new duet for you too.
Next, meet the second member of the String family, the Vibrant Viola!! But it looks like a violin... How are they different? And, what does a pizza, a frog and an avocado have to do with the viola? Let’s find out! Join Vincent, Augustus (Gus) T. Ghost and their new friend, professional violist and classical music podcaster, Casey Bozell as they discover all the cool things to know about the Viola! Gus is always talking about pizza and melted cheese after his lessons, so the viola is apparently a very delicious instrument… Casey and Gus are also looking forward to playing a fun new duet for you!
Next up we’ll Meet the Cello! We're going to visit Mr. Shovels and his teacher, fabulous, professional cellist Karen Schulz-Harmon! What does a head-banging snow man have to do with the cello? Let’s find out! The Cello is huge! Do you hold it like the Violin!?! How does that work? Karen can tell us, and you know it'll be COOL because that's the only kind of instrument that Mr. Shovels would want to play! Join Vincent, Mr. Shovels and Karen and learn all about the Cello! They've also prepared a new duet, and are really excited to perform it!
Next we're going to meet the Big Bass! Fuzzy Furrwater has been learning to play the bass, and his teacher, incredibly cool, professional bassist Maestro Basso Profundo, aka Andrew Harmon, is joining us too. Andrew is very excited to share his knowledge about the bass, how it works, some different kinds of basses, and some great stories too! What do a bull an octopus and a washtub have to do with the bass? Let’s find out! Andrew and Fuzzy have a cool duet to play for us, and they're especially excited because their duet shows off two different ways to play the bass! How Cool!
Lastly, Let's Meet the Harp a very different kind of stringed instrument! Todd the Turkey has been learning how to play the harp, and his teacher, professional harpist Bethany Evans is here to show us how it works. The Harp is huge and has so many strings! How do you know which ones to play? Why does the harp make you feel like you’re floating on a cloud? Let’s find out! Todd and Bethany can show us all the cool things the Harp can do, plus they have a beautiful duet to play for us too.
Easter Egg Bonus Content: Since filming Meet the Instruments, Spot, his cousin Smudge (also a violinist), Gus & Mr. Shovels embarked on a World Tour! Here they are in several exotic locations performing Nicole Buetti’s “Sforza!” (Performed by the UNC String Quartet)
The Nirks give you an up close and personal look at each of their instruments with their professional musician teachers from Orchestra Nova Northwest (Formerly Portland Columbia Symphony). This series is a great way to introduce young kids (and kids at heart) to all of the musical instruments that make up a symphony orchestra. A wonderful homeschool, or classroom tool to help kids learn about each instrument that makes up an orchestra. Join the Nirks and Orchestra Nova Northwest for Meet the Instruments!
We hope you enjoy Meet the Strings – Part 3 of the Meet the Instruments 5 Year Anniversary Special. Next Up we’ll Meet the Percussion, Conductor and hear the final performance, so stay tuned! Thanks for watching!
