Meet the Comets - Lyrics of each comet
Comet C/2025 K1 (ATLAS) I put on a show
That Hubble caught by accident while looking for a different comet you know
While studying their data, scientists saw four comets not one
Just one month after I reached perihelion
Their timing was perfect to see me break apart
Into 4 large pieces, and also some smaller parts
My 4 largest pieces each had a coma of their own
I give scientists a glimpse inside what used to be unknown
I’m Comet Lemmon, but don’t let my name fool you
My coma actually has a very greenish hue
My emerald color is from gas called diatomic carbon you see
When sunlight hits this gas, it makes me shine green
Discovered in January 2025 by the Mount Lemmon Survey
I’m a long period comet, I cannot stay
I’ll make a long journey back out and around the solar system
It will be around 1300 years until my next return
I’m the comet that started an empire, Caesar’s Comet, that’s me
I appeared in the sky above Rome for 7 days in 44 BC
During the funeral games held in honor of Julius Caesar
I became famous in Rome and was named the Julian Star
The timing of my appearance made the Romans think I was a sign
That their former beloved leader was now divine
Caesar’s heir, Octavian, declared himself related to a God to inspire
Which led to him becoming the first Emperor of the Roman Empire
5D/Brorsen, Can you tell me where I am, I’m LOST
I was a Jupiter family comet, but I may have gotten tossed
Ejected from the solar system after my last sighting in 1879
Or did I just disintegrate into something you’ll never find?
P/2019 LD2(ATLAS), an active Centaur
I exhibit traits of both asteroids and comets, bizarre!
Centaurs orbit the Sun between Jupiter and Neptune
But I’m transitioning and will be a Jupiter-family comet soon
I have an active nucleus and I’m developing a coma around me
And I’m very volatile with a tail you can see
In a temporary unstable orbit of 12 years currently
I hope to be an official Jupiter-family comet by 2063
Most Comets we know are local and orbit the sun
Made of the same ingredients that make up our solar system
They are like frozen time capsules that can reveal a lot
If we study them as they approach the Sun and get hot
The ice of the comet turns into a gas coma and tail
That scientists can study to learn what they’re made of in detail
As a comet melts or breaks apart scientists can study deep within
Ancient material that will tell us about the solar system’s origin
Comets, travelers way up high
Cosmic snowballs that pass us by
Comet Swan, I was almost missed because I hovered in the same position in your sky
I looked like I was standing still, because we matched velocity and direction, the Sun and I
Discovered by astronomer, Vladimir Bezugly of Ukraine
A beautiful long period comet, you won’t be seeing me again
Asteroid 2003 RM, but a comet is what I want to be
So, your astronomers came up with a new classification for me
I’m known as a “Dark Comet” sounds kind spooky
But it just means I look like an asteroid, but have comet-like qualities
I have non-gravitational acceleration; I move on my own
The movement is caused by outgassing without visible dust production
I don’t have a coma or tail you can see
Because my gas jets are made up of water most likely

I started out spinning one direction but changed my mind and turned back
It began when I made my 5-and-a-half-year periodic pass
As the sun warmed me Sublimation occurred – when ice turns directly into gas
I had jets of gas forming all over me
Pushing, twisting and torquing me and slowing my spin speed
This ended up changing the direction of my spin eventually
A Jupiter family comet, I’ll return in 2028 for you to see
I’m comet 3I/Atlas and I come from beyond
An interstellar visitor from outside your solar system
Some think I’m an alien spaceship, visiting from another world
Because of many anomalies that your scientists observed
I exhibited non-gravitational acceleration
Was it outgassing, bursts of gas as I heat up? or artificial propulsion
My path aligned with the ecliptic plane the planets share around your Sun
And did I pass so close to Jupiter to send probes for observation?
I’m larger, faster, with brighter outbursts than other interstellar comets
Changing color from reddish to greenish-blue to gold while in transit
After months of observation, I’m heading back out of your solar system
Most scientists now believe I’m a natural comet, though a very active one
