As a younger martial artist I never quite understood what my Grandmaster meant when he would say that he knew every pair of hands. “That each student is unique and even after a long time you’d still remember the nuances and mannerisms of everyone you have brought up since the beginning.” Now having been a teacher for several years, I understand a little better the nostalgia he must experience each time he gets to feed an old friend. All of my COA’s have gone on and forged their paths and I’m proud of each of them. Some will return after many years and I get the honor to feed them. And it’s always a special experience for me, as I get to relive the happy memories of training them through blisters, blood, sweat and laughter. I’ve continued the tradition of shooting memoir videos as a visual journal entry. Like a photo album I get to look back on if I can’t ever “touch hands” with them again.
