Description
Is taxation theft? With more than a dozen states voting on taxes this November, Frédéric Bastiat and Karl Marx are back to fight it out. They're taking us all the way back to 1848, when revolution gave France a new republic and no income tax at all.
Bastiat says the law exists to protect property, and a law that takes from some to give to others is plunder under the guise of “progress.” Marx says the real theft is profit, and a heavy progressive tax is just one step toward ending it.
Which thinker earns the credit, and which one gets written off?
