Sensory Ethnography Today and Tomorrow: Art, Anthropology, & Aesthetics

This course will screen and analyse major works to have emerged from the Sensory Ethnography Lab at Harvard University since its founding in 2006. These include Sweetgrass, Leviathan, Caniba, somniloquies, De Humani Corporis Fabrica, Manakamana, and Expedition Content. The course will also screen and analyse works that have influenced the Sensory Ethnography Lab, and others that have been critical of it, and consider the urgent ethical, aesthetic, ecological, and political challenges that confront image-makers today. Finally, students will undertake various original audiovisual projects with their telephones or cameras that are undertaken each year in the SEL.
