A supercell thunderstorm near Havana, Illinois produced an incredible display of lightning as tornado warnings were issued. Lightning strikes power lines at close range, causing a flashover arc and smoke. A second close strike, a powerful positive lightning bolt, blasts dirt out of the ground and 20 feet into the air as the thunder shock wave visibly impacts the camera. Positive and negative lightning bolts are captured at 6,000 frames per second with a high speed camera, including a strike to a smokestack in Havana where the upward and downward leaders can be seen meeting in mid-air to complete the final lightning strike. This is a rare capture of the lightning "attachment" process! Time-lapse views show the tornado-warned storm developing spectacular structure as tornado warnings are issued. Copyright Dan Robinson
