Demeter was known by other names one being Libera, wife of Liber(aka Dionysus) A couple of her other names were Isis and Proserpina.
Scholars claim Melaine is representative of "black" because of the black clothing Demeter wore when she entered a cave for a time in order to be purified after having been raped. i can affirm this is inaccurate., Whether or not she actually wore black clothing i'm not sure, probably, it makes sense par tradition and custom in recorded history, but i know Melanie means melanated because i/she was very dark for the current skin tone in the area or because she was Goddess of the harvest she was outside a lot so she became very dark. Perhaps they all were quite dark, i mean ya, they were Greek! :)
I've mentioned before how i can get super dark and my late sister even said one summer when i was 15, sort of uncoomfortably and whispery, "Gretchen, you look like a black person". Her words not mine. Perhaps it was because her husband was VERY racist :) It comes from my Grandmother and Grandfather on my father's side but especially from paternal Shoshone Grandmother Edie which was actually the name of BOTH my grandmothers :)
