This video series, “Mainely Resilient: How Maine Farmers Stay Profitable,” highlights Maine farms using U.S. Department of Agriculture programs to manage farm risk.
In this video, Chris Howard, University of Maine Cooperative Extension, speaks with Seth Kroeck, owner of Crystal Spring Farm in Brunswick, Maine. Kroeck discusses using USDA Risk Management Agency Low Bush Blueberry crop insurance and Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program insurance to strengthen his business.
He also highlights:
- Establishing a good relationship with the USDA, including the Farm Service Agency
- Keeping good records
- Networking with other farms by joining agricultural associations, including the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association and the Maine Vegetable and Small Fruit Growers Association
- Using Maine Agricultural Service Provider resources, including Coastal Enterprises Inc. and UMaine Extension
