The leg press gets criticized as an inferior leg exercise that doesn't train stabilizers and ruins your knees. But if you're over 50 and lifting for the long haul, it might be one of the smartest tools you have.
Properly performed, the leg press produces similar quad activation to barbell squats, while reducing stress on the knees and lower back. That makes it especially valuable if you're training alone, dealing with back issues, or can't squat safely without a spotter. You can still load the legs heavy without gambling your spine on every rep.
To do it right, keep your lower back flat against the pad, feet about shoulder‑width apart, and slightly higher on the platform to reduce knee stress. Lower the sled as far as you can, keeping your feet flat on the platform and don't let your pelvis tuck under at the bottom—that's when your low back gets vulnerable. Drive through your mid‑foot, not your toes.
You don't have to abandon squats, but the leg press can be your main compound move in certain phases. It's not cheating—it's smart programming for stronger legs and a happier back.
