Koli is a rugged hills area located in North Karelia, on the shore of Pielinen, and Finland's most famous national landscape.
The chain of Koli hills lies on the border between two bedrock areas of different ages.
Some of the oldest granite gneiss in Finland that goes back more than 2.6 billion years lies to the east. The quartzite rocks on the western side are younger. The area was formed almost 2 billion years ago as an old continental plate collided with a new one, folding to form the Karelid mountains.
This mountain range was about the same height as the present-day Himalayas, but after millions of years of weathering, all that is left is a chain of hills consisting of hard quartzite. The highest peak is Ukko-Koli at 347 metres above sea level. Its rock surface has also been polished by numerous Ice Ages.
Dark diabase veins of solidified lava from ancient volcanoes cut through the chain of hills.
Landscape smoothed by Ice Ages
The rocks of Koli were smoothed and rounded by the fierce caresses of the Ice Age. Till is the dominant soil type in Koli area. Soil formations left behind by the Ice Age, such as hummocky moraine and drumlins, can be found close by the National Park.
On Lake Pielinen to the east of the National Park, you can see a line of islands around 13 kilometres in length. This is an esker formed during the melting phase of the last Ice Age in a river that flowed under the ice sheet. This chain of islands with sandy shores is protected as it has features of esker nature of national importance.
