Synopsis:
Over the past decade, millions of bats across North America have died from a mysterious disease known as White-Nose Syndrome. The epidemic has become one of the greatest wildlife disasters in the history of the United States, threatening several bat species with extinction.
Killer in the Caves follows bat expert Dr. DeeAnn Reeder and wildlife manager Greg Turner as they investigate the deadly outbreak affecting little brown bats and other species. Like forensic detectives, the scientists piece together clues to understand how the disease spreads and why it wakes bats from hibernation, causing them to burn their fat reserves and ultimately starve.
Meanwhile, Dr. Nickolay Hristov explores the enormous colonies of Brazilian free-tailed bats in Texas and New Mexico, trying to determine whether these vast populations could also be at risk.
Through groundbreaking experiments, thermal imaging, high-speed cameras and innovative tracking technology, the researchers race to protect the few remaining survivors. Their work reveals the crucial role bats play in ecosystems and highlights the urgent fight to save these remarkable animals from a devastating epidemic.
