Most concertos of Beethoven’s time began with a bang, with the orchestra laying out every theme before the soloist entered. In his Fourth Piano Concerto, Beethoven throws that convention out of the window, and opens with the piano quiet and alone. Karina explains why this moment is so magical in the concert hall. She also explores the remarkable second movement, where brusque statements from the orchestra alternate with unbelievably delicate playing from the soloist. Finally, she talks about reuniting with Alice Sara Ott. The two recorded Beethoven’s First Piano Concerto together, and this is their first time performing the Fourth.
