Karel – Vendobionta (MAG226)
Following the release of his debut EP on Job Jobse’s De Vlieger and his follow-up EP The Work on Magnetron, Karel quickly gained attention from both the pop and dance scenes across Europe. Armed with just a microphone and boundless energy, Karel captivated audiences and lit up stages with his infectious synth-pop performances.
Last year, Karel released his debut album, sending a clear message: he’s not slowing down. This fall, Karel returns with his highly anticipated follow-up album, Vendobionta. This new release proves he’s more than just hype, as he continues to build an impressive and evolving discography. On Vendobionta, Karel refines his signature electronic new-wave pop sound, blending autotuned vocals with his unmistakable style.
The album title Vendobionta references a period over 500 million years ago, when organisms existed that couldn't be classified as either animals or plants. Karel explores the idea of how defining the world around us can sometimes limit our understanding. This theme is inspired by philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein’s famous quote: "The limits of my language mean the limits of my world." The tracks on this album reflect and grapple with this philosophical concept.
All the tracks were crafted in Karel’s small attic studio, using synths and drum loops. In his own words: “As always, my music is like a haiku in poetry – simple, repetitive, and following familiar structures.”
Vendobionta sounds fresher and more contemporary than Karel’s previous work. It’s a timeless record that defies categorization, carrying one clear message: Karel is here to stay.
