Japan wants nuclear fuel from the ocean

There is about 500 times more uranium in the ocean than in known land reserves. Japanese scientists are trying to harvest it.

Using specially developed braided materials to absorb uranium compounds from seawater, the team has recovered about 1kg so far. Researcher Noriaki Seko says reducing costs is the biggest hurdle before the technology can be commercialised. If it can be scaled up, it could help reduce Japan's reliance on imported uranium for nuclear fuel.
