For anyone who has ever been made to feel like they’re not enough or asked the question “Is she prettier than me?”

This is a spoken word poetry video (a bit different from what I normally do). Its about betrayal, hurt and the consequences that come from that, comparing oneself to others.

It’s a sunny Saturday morning and she’s crying
Eyes weeping chin trembling, mind racing like its close to disassembling
She lifts up her head and tells me. “He’s been cheating on me and now he wants to be with her.”

There’s silence in the air apart from the clank of my cup, as my whole body tenses and prepare to cheer her up

I’m not sure I know how to do this

But I’ve done this before
Like that time she asked me to help fix her laptop or decide between a dress or jeans and nice top

“Hey, don’t worry. There’s plenty more fish in the sea...”

“This is her! Its her” her fingers on her phone screen
Scrolling through the pictures and she asks “Is she prettier than me?”

Is she prettier than me?

I hear another clank but it’s not my cup this time, but a switch that just turned on inside my mind

Prettier? Prettier? Is that what this guy has done?
Making you feel like you’re not this, not that, that you’re simply not enough

Calm I’ve been here before
Endlessly scrolling through some photos until my fingers got sore

The day after my breakup I saw him dining with another lady
I wasn’t angry, I was numb and wanted anything to take that pain away

But that was a different time and now I’m properly healed from my wounds
Not splashing around in swimming pool but sat in my own lagoon

That pain is an old acquaintance, and it was certainly not chosen
And its not sitting in my seat whilst I stand up for a moment

Is she prettier than you?

She could be. She could be slim. She could even be skinny.

She could be a victoria secret model, have cheekbones that could cut diamond,
Have the most luscious gorgeous hair or never age with time and
Have a body from neck down with absolutely zero hair,
Long nails, perk boob and split ends that can self repair
She might even look good in crocs, harem pants or even long johns
Or have four vaginas that have the ability to pop out coupons

But nothing takes away the fact that he didn’t treat you the way you deserved

The weight of your kindness supersedes any reading on a scale
Find strength in how much you can love
That is better than any fairytale

Take that mind that sees blemishes or descends into seeing flaws
And tell it, hey NO!
I’m brave, I’m brilliant and, wait that’s another blemish? Stop. I am so much more

This will be hard but

Stop focusing on him, stop focusing on her
This is your decision now
You’re now the pain police, your own self-recovery entrepreneur

And you will use this experience to discover your worth

Despite the anguish, betrayal or any possible pain
You’ll get to a stage where you won’t ever need to ask whether someone’s prettier than you ever again.
