A few months ago, the Arxipelagos mission travelled to the harbour of Faaborg, Denmark, to attend the official presentation of the new European research project “MERLIN”, funded under the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme. The event brought together representatives from universities, research centres, industrial partners, and organisations from across Europe that are contributing to the development of a new generation of autonomous maritime systems expected to transform the way scientific research, infrastructure inspections, and marine environmental monitoring are conducted. The MERLIN project is the natural successor to the highly successful Horizon 2020 project ENDURUNS, which was completed in July 2023 and had previously been presented by Arxipelagos during a special mission to the Salone Nautico Venezia, held annually in Venice. ENDURUNS demonstrated that autonomous maritime systems can operate for extended periods in challenging environments, collecting valuable data and supporting both scientific and industrial applications. MERLIN builds upon this experience and knowledge, taking a significant step forward towards the development of an even more advanced, flexible, and energy-efficient autonomous system.
