India is set to launch its first hydrogen-powered train on the Jind–Sonipat route in Haryana, marking a major milestone in Indian Railways’ journey towards green mobility and sustainable transportation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to flag off the indigenous hydrogen fuel-cell train from Jind on July 17, 2026. The project supports India’s clean-energy transition, railway modernisation and net-zero emission goals.
Hydrogen fuel-cell technology generates electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, producing water and heat as by-products. Unlike conventional diesel trains, hydrogen-powered trains can significantly reduce local air pollution and carbon emissions, particularly on non-electrified railway routes.
In this video, we explain how India’s first hydrogen train works, the significance of the Jind–Sonipat pilot route, the indigenous hydrogen storage and refuelling facility established at Jind, the role of PESO and RDSO in ensuring safety, and the importance of hydrogen technology for India’s transport sector.
