In the Footsteps of a Documentary Photographer

As a documentary photographer and cinematographer, I’ve travelled to almost 140 countries over the past fifty years.

Self-taught, I’ve tried to capture authentic images that not only document diverse ways of life but - I hope – inform, inspire, and influence other ways of thinking.

The intent of this book is to give readers a general idea of the types of images that can be found in various parts of the world. This I hope will in turn help young photographers better plan their own photographic journeys in accordance with the types of images they plan to capture.

For this series of four books, I’ve selected forty-five destinations I’ve visited between 1977 and 2026. In each chapter, I take readers through each country step by step so they can trace each journey on a world map. As well, I describe in detail some of the things I learned about the people I met and some of the challenges I faced.

In Part 1 of the series, I focus on ten countries – Afghanistan, Mauritania, Central African Republic, Papua New Guinea, India, Namibia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Morocco, and Madagascar.

In Part 2 of the series, I focus on fourteen countries - Jordan, Benin, Mozambique, Israel, Palestinian Territories, Thailand, Ecuador, Vietnam, Laos, Oman, Rwanda, Mali, Taiwan, and Cuba.

In Part 3 of the series, I focus on eleven countries - Mongolia, Yemen, Haiti, Indonesia, Cambodia, Myanmar, Belize, Gabon, Australia, South Korea, and New Zealand.

In Part 4 of this series, I focus on ten countries – In Part 1 of the series, I focus on ten countries - Afghanistan,
Republic of the Congo, China, Burkina Faso, Japan, Zambia, Uganda, Bhutan, Lesotho, Tunisia, and Malawi.

For readers wishing to see more photos and videos of these journeys, I invited them to visit my website DougSpencerVideo.com. Under the website A - Z headings, select the name of the country featured in each chapter of this book. For example, additional photos and videos on Afghanistan can be found under A-B.

Join me on these journeys and bear witness to the challenges some cultures face and perhaps learn about other ways of living while we still can. Better still, plan and take your own photographic journeys to many of the planet’s remarkable destinations.
