Political processes and the idea of kingship are central to understanding the culture and history of ancient and early medieval India. In this interview, Hermann Kulke discusses his influential work on integrative state formation, kingship ideology, and temple-centred polities, with reference to Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and Southeast Asia.
He is in conversation with Bhairabi Prasad Sahu, Yaaminey Mubayi, and Meenakshi Vashisth, reflecting on his intellectual journey and his comparative research on the Gajapati kingship of Odisha and the Devaraja tradition of Angkor.
Prof. Kulke was Professor Emeritus at Kiel University and a leading scholar of South and Southeast Asian history.
