| Thrombocytopenia
Opener animation sequence that depicts excessive bleeding as a result of a low platelet count.
Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), formerly known as idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, is an autoimmune disorder characterized by a low platelet count (thrombocytopenia) due to immune system-mediated destruction of platelets and impaired platelet production.
Because platelets are crucial for blood clotting, individuals with ITP are at an increased risk of bruising, petechiae (small red or purple spots on the skin), and excessive bleeding.
ITP occurs when the immune system mistakenly produces autoantibodies against platelets, leading to their destruction primarily in the spleen and liver.
