In Memoriam: Warrel Dane (1961–2017)
It is never easy to hear about a musician you love leaving this mortal coil. It is even harder when you’ve been a fan for a long time and it strikes without warning. I have been listening to the vocals of Warrel Dane since I was approaching adulthood, so it’s going to be strange now that he is gone. Warrel has/had a voice that was polarizing like King Diamond, so his fans weren’t casual by any means. Warrel wasn’t a celebrity like Lemmy or Ronnie James Dio, but all real metal fans that are passionate about this kind of music know of his exploits. He fronted not one, but two innovative bands, guested on numerous albums, and was a metal fan himself. He was currently writing and recording for a sophomore solo album in Sao Paolo, Brazil, so news of his passing largely hit the internet in Portuguese and Spanish through the rumor mill. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a sick joke and he really has joined others in Valhalla. To commemorate a very important individual—at least for me—I have decided to collect the metal world’s response. Thanks for leaving me 30 years of metal to keep my mind alert until I join you somewhere down the line…
