“I don’t read tutorials... I just try things out”: How Loraine James made an 'IDM Popstar' album

Description

Loraine James is one of the most prominent figures among a new wave of artists recontextualising the sounds of early-'00s ambient and IDM. Between her minimal, beatless releases as Whatever The Weather and he more glitchy, club-focused work for Hyperdub under her own name, James has become known for her detailed, textural productions and an ear for warm, nostalgic melodies.

Last month she returned with her latest Loraine James album, Detached From The Rest of You, a 12 track collection that James has described as her 'IDM popstar album', which features guest appearances from Tirzah, Miho Hatori and Low's Alan Sparhawk.

Ahead of the release, we met up with James in London to talk about the album's creation, her approach to making electronic music, and why studio gear isn't everything.
