Want your videos to be funnier and more engaging? Dan from @Danvinci1 shows how to use meme sound effects, reverb and distortion in your edits.
In this episode of Sound Snacks, Dan shares how he uses meme sound effects to make educational content more entertaining. There’s no meme rulebook, but there are a few things that separate a good meme from a bad one.
Tips for using meme sound effects
Pick sounds that are relatable, or at least identifiable.
Use unexpected sounds. A jump from silence to sound grabs attention.
Cut sound effects off abruptly for comedic effect.
Check your levels in the mixer so you don’t deafen your audience. A big jump between audio levels needs adjusting.
Add reverb: duplicate the clip, make the room size huge and raise the reverb time. Zoom the shot out into a black void for extra comedy.
Fake audio peaking with distortion. Bring the ceiling right down, then pair it with a camera shake.

FAQ
What is a meme sound effect?
A sound effect used for comedic or attention-grabbing effect in a video. Dan recommends relatable, identifiable or unexpected sounds.
How do you make audio sound like it’s peaking?
Apply distortion and bring the ceiling right down. If your editor has no distortion effect, look for a ceiling control. Pair it with a camera shake.
What does reverb do?
It controls how long sounds bounce around a room. A huge room size and long reverb time make a line sound much bigger.
How do you stop meme SFX from being too loud?
Watch the mixer and level your clips so there’s no massive jump between audio levels.
