Description
Picky eating is extremely common—especially between ages 2–6, when children develop independence and start demanding food choices. But picky eating can lead to nutrition gaps, poor weight gain, vitamin deficiencies and growth issues.
In this video, Dr. Purnachander Sirikonda, MD, FAAP, explains:
🍽 Why picky eating happens in toddlers
👶 Ages 2–6 = independence + food refusal
🎨 Use food presentation, color & shapes to attract kids
🥄 Offer 2 simple choices (not force-feeding)
📈 Why monitoring growth is essential
• Track height, weight & BMI under 18–20
• Avoid extremes: under-nutrition or obesity
• Watch for failure to thrive and intervene early
🥗 Fixing nutritional deficiencies
Kids who snack on sugary foods lack:
• Protein
• Zinc (important for appetite hormones)
• Vitamins A, B12, C, E
🥩 Protein suggestions:
• Lean meats: chicken, turkey, fish
• Eggs
• Soy, tofu, lentils, dals, legumes, mushrooms
📌 Peak growth ages:
• Girls: 9–12 years
• Boys: 11–14 years
This is the most important high-protein period!
Healthy nutrition now = healthy teenagers later.
