Description

More than 50,000 children were targeted by “sextortion” scams last year alone. Reporter Martha Mendoza explains how sextortion, or sexual blackmail, works and how to respond if it happens to you.

Teenage boys are particularly vulnerable to these financially-motived scams designed to make quick cash. Experts say talking to teens about how these scams work can help prevent them. If someone is targeted, law enforcement advises: don’t pay the scammer, block them, save the evidence of threats, report the account to the platform and contact law enforcement.

Learn how sextortion scams and other scams are costing Americans billions of dollars each year in FRONTLINE’s documentary “Scammed,” now streaming on our YouTube channel.
