What Are Puffy Tacos?
Puffy tacos are a San Antonio–style Tex-Mex specialty known for their light, airy shells that puff up when fried, creating a texture that’s both crispy on the outside and tender inside.
Puffy tacos were invented in San Antonio, Texas, with the first known version served at Ray’s Drive-In in 1956. They became widely popular when Ray’s brother Henry introduced them at Henry’s Puffy Tacos in 1978. The dish has since become a local icon, often associated with San Antonio’s street food culture and festivals.
