As I travel around the country walking properties and creating habitat plans, many of those landowners would like a deer herd analysis to understand what their deer population is,
what’s their buck to doe ratio,
where are they bedding if they’re bedding on the property at all,
are they bedding in switchgrass or in the timber or
are they out in the swamps.
Are there heavy deer trails in the swamp and where do they lead to?
This is all good information to know to help landowners become better
managers of their deer herd and habitat.
Not every state allows drones to survey deer at any time of the year.
MI, NY and IL do not allow deer recoveries nor deer surveys with a drone at any time…period.
Most other states allow drone deer surveys only in the off-season. Check online first if your state allows the use of drones
But when it comes to just getting updated aerial photos and video of your property, that can be done anytime anywhere.
If you want a really high definition aerial photo of your property where you can see deer trails going through fields and swamps and even tracks in the snow, then you’ll want an orthomosaic image of your property where the drone flys a grid of your property just above treetop level while taking hundreds of high def pictures in 1 second increments producing hundreds of hi res photos, which are uploaded into a special software program that stitches them all together to create one super high resolution aerial image of your property that no online satellite imagery can come close to.
You can see on this orthomosaic image of a hunting property, the clear clarity isn’t reduced as you zoom way in. You can see individual trees and faint trails that you simply can’t see with any satellite image online.
Not only can you have these maps on your phone or tablet, but these can be printed on a number of different canvases like heavy stock paper, vinyl, aluminum, steel, foam boards and even dry erase marker boards all of which can be printed in any custom size to hang on your wall.
Being able to see all the finer details and how they relate to each other is a big advantage over viewing it on a phone or tablet….especially for grandpa.
So for landowners who want a detailed orthomosaic aerial image of their property, and also need a habitat plan created, the habitat plan would be printed on a separate clear layer that can be overlaid onto the map. That way the habitat plan can be edited later without reprinting the whole map.
So these are a couple new features I’m offering going into the 2026 habitat season. By the end of this hunting season the 2026 calendar will almost be full again so don’t wait long if you want any help getting your property dialed in for better deer hunting moving forward.
