Madaripur subdivision was established in 1854 under the district of Bakerganj. In 1873 it was separated from Bakerganj and annexed to Faridpur district. Madaripur subdivision was turned into a district in 1984. Madaripur district was named after the Sufi saint Sayed Badiuddin Ahmed Zinda Shah Madar (d. 1434 CE).
During the War of Liberation, many direct encounters were held between the Faraizi Movement and the Pakistan army in Madaripur.
প্রখ্যাত সুফি সাধক কুতুব-ই-জাহান হযরত বদিউদ্দীন আহমেদ জিন্দা শাহ মাদার (রঃ) এর নাম অনুসারে মাদারিপুর জেলার নামকরণ করা হয়। শাহ মাদার (র) ইসলাম ধর্ম প্রচারের উদ্দেশ্যে সিরিয়া হতে সুলতান ফিরোজ শাহ তুঘলকের শাসনকালে (১৩৫১-১৩৮৮খ্রি:) ভারতে পরে বঙ্গের নানা স্থানে ভ্ররণ করেন। মাদার্শা, মাদারবাড়ী, মাদারি খাল, মাদারিপুর, মাদারঠেক, শামান্দারের ঘাট তার শুভাগমনের স্থানীয় স্মৃতি রক্ষা করছে। ভারতবর্ষে মুসলিম শাসন প্রতিষ্ঠার পরে যে সকল সুফী সাধারন্যে অসাধারন প্রভাব বিস্তার করেন তাদের মধ্যে শাহ মাদার অন্যতম।[৩] চতুর্দশ শতাব্দীর কোনো এক সময়ে বঙ্গের বিভিন্ন স্থান ভ্রমনের এক পর্যায়ে তৎকালিন চন্দ্রদ্বীপের উত্তর সিমান্তে গভীর অরন্যের যে স্থানটিতে তিনি ক্ষণিকের অতিথি হয়ে সহযাত্রীদের নিয়ে যাত্রা বিরতি বা বিশ্রাম গ্রহণ করেছিলেন সে স্থানটিতে তার নামানুসারে হযরত শাহ মাদার (র) এর দরগাহ শরীফ নামকরণ করে স্মৃতি স্তম্ভ নির্মীত হয়েছে। সপ্তদশ শতাব্দীর মাঝামাঝি সময়ে বিক্রমপুরের জমিদার ভূমিহীন প্রজাদের পূনর্বাসনের লক্ষে চন্দ্রদ্বীপের স্মৃতিবিজড়িত ঐ স্থানটিকে কেন্দ্র করে সরকার মাদারণ বা মাদারণ অঞ্চল নামে আখ্যায়িত করে ফসলি জমি ও আবাসন গড়ে তুলেন। যা পরবর্তীতে নগরায়নে রুপ নিতে থাকে, নাম হয় মাদারণ গ্রাম-উনিয়ন। পর্যায়ক্রমে নগর সভ্যতার বিবর্তনের ফলে মাদারণ নাম থেকে ১৮৫৪ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে মাদারিপুর থানা-সাব ডিভিশন, ১৮৭৫ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে মাদারিপুর পৌরসভা এবং ১৯৮৪ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয় আজকের মাদারিপুর জেলা।[৪]
